Don’t Stop Belivin’

A rock song introduced by the musical group Journey in 1981.

On my 35 anniversary of work, my son Paul sent me this song as a gift.

Every time I hear this song I think of my son and of the lessons of perseverance I have accumulated over the years.

This song is on my running play list and when it comes on I get a little more strength and pick up the speed for a bit.

Lyrics by Journey, my comments / reactions are in bold following each verse.

“Just a small town girl

Livin’ in a lonely world

She took the midnight train going anywhere”

  • The excitement of going to a new place.

“Just a city boy

Born and raised in South Detroit

He took the midnight train going anywhere”

  • No matter who you are you can explore and find excitement

“A singer in a smokey room

The smell of wine and cheap perfume

For a smile they can share the night

It goes on and on, and on, and on”

  • Opportunity abounds..

“Strangers waiting

Up and down the boulevard

Their shadows searching in the night”

  • Looking for opportunity

“Streetlights people

Livin’ just to find emotion

Hidin’ somewhere in the night

Workin’ hard to get my fill

Everybody wants a thrill

Payin’ anything to roll the dice just one more time”

  • Working hard is rewarding

“Some will win, some will lose

Some were born to sing the blues

Oh, the movie never ends

It goes on and on, and on, and on”

  • Everyone has an opportunity

“Strangers waiting

Up and down the boulevard

Their shadows searching in the night”

  • Looking for happiness

“Streetlights people

Livin’ just to find emotion

Hidin’ somewhere in the night”

  • Still looking

“Don’t stop believin’

Hold on to that feelin’

Streetlight people”

  • Have faith – you can do it

“Don’t stop believin’

Hold on

Streetlight people”

  • You will be great

“Don’t stop believin’

Hold on to that feelin’

Streetlight people”

  • Live for today and enjoy the time you get with friends and family

As I prepare for my half marathon 8 days from now the 4 month’s of training is starting to pay off.  I have stuck to the training schedule almost exactly with very few variations.  I have had my rough periods as I expanded my distances or dealt with high temperatures and humidity.

It is very exciting and frightening at the same time.  I am thrilled that I am able to do this and plan to continue to run after the race as long as I am able – when we get into the bitter cold hopefully the YMCA will be open to work on treadmills again.
